Spina bifida, diplomyelia and multiple malformations in a Texel lamb

ABSTRACT: This report described the clinical and pathological aspects of open spina bifida diplomyelia along with multiple congenital malformations in a Texel lamb. Clinically, paresis thoracic limbs, paralysis pelvic limbs cutaneous opening lumbosacral region were observed. At necropsy, there was focally extensive disruption skin associated an absence dorsal portions vertebrae. Additionally, lumbar segment, mild hydromyelia moderate communicating hydrocephalus lateral third ventricles noted. Possible viral etiologies (bovine diarrhea virus, bluetongue Schmallemberg virus) not detected by RT-PCR, toxic plants identified. Therefore, possible genetic cause may be discarded.
